VISTA Position Openings:
Public Relations & Marketing
Service Dates: December 2010 - December 2011
The Poverty Reduction Initiative is seeking a qualified candidate with experience in communications to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer In Service To America).
The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing marketing materials, writing newsletters, creating promotional videos, spearheading online advocacy, managing databases, writing press releases, strengthening media relations and updating the website, blog and other online materials.
Qualifications:
This is an entry-level position with opportunities to gain considerable communications experience in the non-profit field. The position requires relevant experience or a degree in communications, marketing or public relations.
The ideal candidate would have familiarity with:
• Capturing and editing video (Final Cut Pro)
• Creating marketing materials using Microsoft Publisher
• Updating CMS websites (Content Management Systems) and Social Media
• Writing press releases/working with local media
• Database management
• Strong writing skills
• A non-profit background
The VISTA positions are one-year commitments with option for renewal. Applicants should desire to be part of poverty reduction in Kalamazoo, have a passion for social justice, and be willing to dedicate a year to their community and Kalamazoo residents in need.

VISTAs are involved in:
• Building community-wide awareness of poverty issues and available resources
• Keeping both community residents and decision makers aware of their neighbors in poverty.
• Facilitating and developing coordinated and comprehensive poverty reduction strategies for Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan
• Participate in public awareness campaigns, and coordinate outreach strategy.
